Designing Modular Belt Applications for Automotive Production Lines

Engineering modular belts for automotive production

Automotive and supplier production lines may convey parts, fixtures and components across a wide range of weights and geometries. Sharp-edged metal parts, oily surfaces, plastic components and assembly sub-groups do not place the same demands on a belt surface. A modular belt project for the automotive industry should therefore evaluate load, contact conditions, line speed and maintenance requirements together.

Define the geometry of the conveyed part

It is important to know which surface contacts the belt, how the load is distributed and whether there are protruding or sharp features. Products that create concentrated point loads may require a different support approach from broad-based totes. Include individual product weight and base dimensions in addition to total load.

Oil, chemicals and temperature

Depending on the process, the belt may come into contact with oil, process fluids or cleaning chemicals. Parts may also leave a process at a temperature different from the surrounding environment. Where possible, provide the chemical type, concentration, contact duration and temperature range during material assessment.

Fixtures and positioning

Some automotive applications convey the product on a fixture or carrier rather than directly on the belt. Fixture base, total load, spacing and positioning accuracy then become important. Sensors, stops or robot loading points should be evaluated as part of the full conveying sequence.

Line speed and cycle time

Conveyor speed may be directly tied to assembly or process cycle time. Frequent start-stop operation, indexing or accumulation can change dynamic loads. Belt and drive arrangements should be selected around the actual operating scenario, not only a nominal speed.

Maintenance and replacement access

If maintenance space and downtime are limited, access to connecting rods, sprockets and wear components should be planned during design. The service advantage of a modular construction can only be used effectively when the conveyor is safe and accessible.
